Microsoft tells IE faithful on Windows XP to avoid F1 key

Still hanging around on Windows XP? Perfectly acceptable. Still using Internet Explorer to browse the world wide web? Just a wee bit less forgivable, but we understand that some of you simply can’t get around it. If we just rung your bell, you might want to rip the F1 key right off of your keyboard (at least temporarily), as a recently discovered vulnerability in VBScript — which can only bother Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 — could allow malicious code to weasel its way right into your life with a single keystroke. As the story goes, some ill-willed web sites are encouraging users to smash the F1 key in order to access a Microsoft Help file, and when said key is depressed, “arbitrary code could be executed in the security context of the currently logged-on user.” Microsoft has promised to fully investigate and resolve the issue in due time, but ’til then, we’d highly suggest avoiding your F1 key like the plague switching to Firefox.

Smartbook’s laptops hands-on: a MacBook and a VAIO walk into a bar…

Bewildering. We’re pretty sure that’s the only way to describe our adventure at Smartbook’s CeBIT booth. First off, let us just clear up that there are absolutely no smartbooks on display — don’t forget that this is the company that’s going after Qualcomm’s jugular for using the term smartbook in the first place. Now that that’s out of the way, the German outfit introduced two new 11.6-inch laptops at the show, both which are clearly a rip on Apple and Sony laptops. What’s confusing there? Well, the fact that they are actually nice. First off is the Atom N280-powered Razor that’s clad in a brushed aluminum that feels impeccably similar to the unibody MacBook. Sure, it will run like a last-generation Windows 7 netbook, but it felt seriously solid in hand. Next up is that ULV-packing Logo we told you about last week, and with a glowing power button embedded in its circular hinge there’s no doubt that it was Sony VAIO “inspired.” Again, the make is actually quite good, and we were shocked to feel how sturdy the chiclet keyboard was. Both KIRFs the Smartbook Logo and Razor should go for about 699 Euros when they become available in Europe this spring. Not amused yet? The pictures of the Swarovski covered netbook below should just about do it — and we have video proof after the break, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Fans Could Soon Find ‘Glee’ in Their Hometowns

GleeTaking a page from the successful annual ‘American Idol’ concert tours, ‘Glee’ co-creator Ryan Murphy is taking his own group of talented kids on the road. ‘Glee Live! In Concert!’ is a seven-show, four-city tour that features all the members of the William McKinley High School glee club performing some of their most popular numbers from the hit FOX series.

“The response of the fans to our little show has been so immediate and so gratifying, we wanted to get out and thank them live and in person,” said Murphy. “We can’t wait to take this show on the road and the actors couldn’t be more excited to perform live for audiences in these four cities.” The mini-tour kicks off May 18 in Phoenix, and continues through Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City.

Watch This: Robert Pattinson is ‘Bothered’

In spite of a career that in theory is based on sexy scowling, it’s nice to know that when it comes down to it, at least Robert Pattinson has a sense of humor about the whole thing. Last night the actor appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to promote his romantic drama, Remember Me, and Fallon took the chance to revive his series of comedy skits titled, “Robert is Bothered”. The premise is pretty simple: two minute rants about all the things that bother Mr. Pattinson (as played by Fallon), including New Moon, shirtless werewolves, and Valentine’s Day (you can see the other skits over on robertisbothered.com). So last night, Fallon donned his Twilight button-down and polished off his bad British accent to welcome a special guest to his tree: the man himself, Edward Cullen (aka Pattinson).

It’s strange, but after watching the clip, I realized that while I’m not exactly a fan of the Twilight series, there is a big part of me that wants to see its leads make it out of the franchise with their careers intact. Luckily for Edward’s better half, Kristen Stewart, she has her lead role in The Runaways to bring her some dramatic credibility, but Pattinson is still in ’smolder’ mode as the damaged rich boy in Remember Me, and his next two films, Bel Ami, and Unbound Captives seem to still be trading on Pattinson’s ‘romance’ appeal. But thanks to Fallon, at least if Pattinson gets to be in on the unintentional comedy that Twilight has become, it can only help his reputation in the eyes of non-Twihards everywhere.

After the jump: some classic Pattinson, which mainly involves looking cute while hanging out in a tree…

Panasonic slips Core i5 into ‘world’s lightest’ 12.1-inch Toughbook C1 convertible tablet

We tell ya — all this tablet talk sure has us feeling like it’s 2003. You know, minus all that Y2K hangover stuff. Anywho, Panasonic has today outed what it’s calling the planet’s lightest 12.1-inch convertible tablet PC, with the Toughbook C1 offering the line’s iconic rigidity while boasting 10 hours of battery life, an optional Gobi 2000 mobile broadband module and Intel’s decidedly potent 2.4GHz Core i5-520 processor. All told, the device weighs just 3.2 pounds with a single battery (3.7 pounds with twins), and there’s full support for digitizers and multitouch. Other specs include a shock-mounted, flex-connect 250GB hard drive, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, a WXGA (1,280 x 800) LED-backlit panel, a triple hinge design and the ability to survive a 30-inch plummet. It’s available to (quite literally) smash iPads starting this June, though that $2,499 starting price may be somewhat off-putting to those without copious amounts of disposable income.

Sanyo's new SPL Eneloop hybrid bike charges on flats to pull you up hills

There comes a time in every bicyclist’s life when you come to realize “I really don’t want to pedal up that hill.” For those riding a Sanyo Eneloop, they don’t have to. The series of bikes has been getting more advanced over the years, and the new SPL models are the smartest yet. Whereas previous editions could only regeneratively charge themselves on downhills or when the brakes were applied, this new series can juice up while the rider is pedaling along on the flats. This presumably increases the rolling resistance somewhat but the new “Eco Charge Mode” is said to boost range by 53 percent. More importantly, a new chrome basket shows that this ride means business. It won’t come cheap, though, shipping to Japanese pedalers on April 21 for ¥157,290, or about $1,800. For that kind of money we’ll stick with our fleet of Huffy 10-speeds.

It’s easier to stop fog from forming on San Francisco Bay than to halt special interest money from flowing to politicians. The solution to achieving a more representative Democracy is not banning money from politics. Rather, to level the playing field in politics, we must do the same in economics.

Lotus outs wild Evora 414E Hybrid plug-in concept car

Concept cars are like unicorns — they’re so prevalent and vaporous, they’re hardly worth remarking upon. Every so often, though, one pops out into the ether that’s really worth a second look. Lotus’ Evora 414E Hybrid concept certainly fits into that category. This plug-in car boasts (or would boast, should it come into existence), 1.2 liter, three-cylinder engine, independent electric motors for the rear wheels, with a range of about 300 miles. The glass engine cover pictured above, however, is just one of the features we find ourselves double-taking here. The Evora 414E would also pack some ‘vroom vroom’ noises by way of its audio system to take care of the ever-pressing danger of silent auto engines. The engine can operate on alcohol-based fuels or regular old gasoline, and the battery-only range is in the neighborhood of 35 miles. The Lotus Evora 414E hybrid will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

NVIDIA Ion 2 now official; Acer, ASUS and Lenovo at the ready

March 2, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
NVIDIA’s Ion 2 chipset — or “the next generation of Ion” as the company clunkily calls it — hasn’t exactly been a secret, but NVIDIA is finally signing on the dotted line and giving up the deets on the new Intel Atom-compatible graphics chipset. It hasn’t been a secret that Ion 2 uses NVIDIA’s new Optimus GPU switching tech to automatically toggle between the Pineview chipset’s integrated GMA 3150 and a discrete NVIDIA Ion GPU, but we can now confirm that both the 16-core Ion chip for desktops and eight-core unit for netbooks are based on the GeForce G210 GPU. That means Ion 2 should support HDMI out, 1080p Blu-ray and Flash playback, Windows 7 Home Premium, and mainstream gaming out of the box. (Take that, Broadcom Crystal HD.) And unlike Ion numero uno, NVIDIA’s also promising up to 10 hours of battery life on netbooks — thanks to Optimus the system knows when to shut off the discrete GPU when not in use to save power.

How about some actual systems? While the Acer Aspire 532G netbook already popped up at MWC, NVIDIA is promising 30 more Ion netbooks, nettops and all-in-ones before the summer. To kick it off, NVIDIA confirmed that ASUS will update its Eee PC 1201PN netbook, Eee Top 2010P, and Eee Box with the new graphics solution, while Lenovo’s C200 and Acer’s Aspire Revo will also get in on the action. We got to see the Revo strut some Blu-ray playback, so hit the break for some video footage and the full PR.
