ASUS Eee PC 1015PE, 1015P and 1001PQ hands-on

Oh, you thought we were done with ASUS’ new Eee PC models at CeBIT. That’s cute. In addition to launching the aluminum 1018P and 1016P, ASUS has also quietly released the 1015PE and 1015P (or Diary series as it says on the units), which look to be joining the Seashell line with some minor design tweaks. The 1016PE’s faux dark wood lid has a more professional look, and its shape reminds us somewhat of HP’s Mini 5102. On the other hand, the 1015P has a white, softer-looking matte lid and an updated touchpad with integrated mouse buttons. Inside it appears they will be available with Intel’s Pine Trail Atom N450 and N470 processors, and apparently the forthcoming N455 and N475 CPUs. Last but not least, ASUS also seemed to whip out the race car-inspired, kid-intended 1001PQ that has the same specs as the 1005PE we reviewed awhile back. We don’t know about you, but we’d actually dig that design for ourselves. Until the next Tales from ASUS’ Eee PC booth update, we leave you with the hands-on pictures below.

Don’t count on these being available at your local mega-electronics retailer, but InFocus’ new series of large, thin displays aimed at business and education users may just have you wishing they were. Available in 42, 55, and 65-inch varieties, the slim, professional-grade displays all pack a full 1080p resolution, a generous supply of inputs (including HDMI, VGA and RS232 for Crestron and AMX integration), a split screen feature to accommodate two separate video sources, and some anti-burn-in technology that will let you leave a pie chart up on the screen all day without any worries (if that’s your thing). Of course, professional-grade also come with professional-grade prices, and these are no exception, with them running $1,399, $2,599, and $7,499 — although InFocus insists they are aimed at the “budget-conscious professional.”

Phillip Bloch gives us his latest Pre-Oscars Tinseltown scoop.

Take it away, Bloch!

I continue on the road to Oscar gold, passing and stopping at luncheons, cocktail parties, fashion showrooms and galas along the way.

Merle Ginsberg, famed fashion writer, contestant on Bravo’s “Launch My Line” and one of the panelists on Logo Network’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” hosted an event at the eyebrow and beauty goddess of Beverly Hills’ new namesake salon, Anastasia.

The primping mecca is located at 11933 Wilshire Boulevard and it’s the hot spot for all of Hollywood’s big wigs. Oprah has already been in to get her eyebrows done, and last year’s Oscar winner and this year’s nominee, Penelope Cruz made a pit stop.

Aside from the fact that Anastasia’s been doing the brows of everyone in Hollywood for years, she’s also superchic, as in donning an incredible Balmain jacket for the fête — she’s not yo momma’s eyebrow tweezer.

And the salon offers the ultimate celeb attraction: privacy! There is a secret back gated parking lot that allows celebs to slip-in paparazzi free. To get a beautification treatment and be on your merry way without shutterbugs snapping shots — pre- or post-eyebrow perfecting — is a true luxury.

At this new retreat it’s not only about getting your eyebrows done, Anastasia provides the whole beauty package. The good news, anyone can get the Hollywood treatment. The bad news, it’ll cost you a pretty penny to be as perfect as Penelope and all of Anastasia’s other celeb clients.

Check out the previous Blochbuster and stay tuned for the next!

HP EliteBook 8740w specs begin to take shape, ATI FirePro M7820 revealed

You’ve been wondering, we know, why the newly unveiled 2540p and 2740p EliteBooks from HP weren’t accompanied by their heavyweight compadre, the 8740w, but as it turns out the latter might be taking a bit longer to launch due to its inclusion of ATI’s as yet unannounced FirePro M7820 GPU. Joining up with the earlier leaked M5800, this is likely to form the backbone of ATI’s pro graphics refresh, with its innards based on the successful HD 5870, meaning it offers DirectX 11 functionality, 1GB of GDDR5 memory, and probably the most graphical horsepower your lap has ever seen. This is aided by the low-voltage, but highly potent Core i7-720QM CPU and four DDR3 slots for up to 16GB of RAM on the 8740w. You have until the end of the month to figure out what to do with all that power, which is when the rumormongers expect this machine to be announced.

[Thanks, Reznov]

RealNetworks to stop selling RealDVD, your copyrights are safe — for now

Remember when RealNetworks said it wasn’t giving up on RealDVD, that it would fight the good fight and appeal the August ruling finding its DVD copying application wasn’t quite legal. Well, a lot of things can change in five months and now it seems Real is caving in to the inevitable crush of the movie industry, setting the lawsuit filed by the MPAA for $4.5 million and instantly turning existing copies of RealDVD into collectors items. (Hope you kept those boxes in mint condition!) What’s next for Real remains to be seen, as the company just spun off Rhapsody to be its own thing, but surely whatever it comes up with will not involve the copying of copyrighted things onto other things.

In Beating Duke, Maryland Proves a Point

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Gary Williams couldn’t resist, and he shouldn’t have had to. A little over a year ago, when it seemed that his team couldn’t do anything right, couldn’t reach the end of the season without sweating out an NCAA tournament bid, didn’t seem like it belonged on the court with programs like Duke, he took it all personally and imbued his players with the same sense of resolve.

So on Wednesday night, after his team held off the fourth-ranked team in the country, avenged an earlier thorough defeat on the road, tied arch-rival Duke for the ACC championship and waded through the throng of students who had rushed the Comcast Center floor, Williams praised the trio of seniors who spearheaded the 79-72 victory and offered the back of his hand to his longtime critics at the same time.

“Those three guys are special, because they’ve all come through some things,” Williams said afterward of guards Greivis Vasquez and Eric Hayes and forward Landon Milbourne. “They’ve heard, especially last year, that they weren’t good enough. It’s nice to see that they are good enough to come through four years and win.

“We kind of stuck it to some people who didn’t have some very nice things to say,” he added.

The irony of it all, of course, was that by the time this game arrived, Maryland (now 22-7 and 12-3 in the ACC), ranked 22nd and winners of five straight, was given a good chance to beat Duke (25-5, 12-3), even though the Blue Devils had won eight straight, including a 21-point win at Cameron Indoor Stadium last month. This time, though, the Terps’ seniors, honored before their final home game, scored the first 12 points of the game as Maryland jumped ahead 7-0, 10-2 and 15-5.

They also were money in the bank at the end, particularly the volatile Vasquez, who when the teams were trading the lead back and forth throughout the final 10 minutes, managed to go out true to himself and his outsized personality. He tossed in a three-pointer with five minutes left to give Maryland a lead, launched a twisting runner on the right baseline with 3:49 left to put them ahead again — and, finally, heaved up something again from the right baseline that barely qualified as a “shot” with 38 seconds left, got it to bounce in, and gave Maryland a 73-69 cushion.

Purdue, IU Suffer in Different Ways

March 4, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The natural order here is that Indiana basketball has a God complex and Purdue has an inferiority complex. That’s the starting point when these schools play each other, as they did Wednesday night.

Purdue crushed Indiana, as everyone does. This one was 74-55, but winning and losing wasn’t as neat and orderly as it sounds. Indiana is a shambles of a program, and Purdue has had everything lined up perfectly to finally win the national championship, including the Final Four in its home state.

This has been the perfect year for this Charlie Brown of a program. And then, someone pulled the football away again. Robbie Hummel, the team’s best player, heart and soul, glue, you name it — blew out his knee a few days ago. He tore his ACL and is out for the year. Last year, he cracked his vertebrae when Purdue was looking good.

Now, Purdue is not going to get a No. 1 seed, not going to reach the Final Four. Deep down, everyone here knows it, though they say things like senior tough guy Chris Kramer said Wednesday night about why he chose to come to Purdue out of high school when the team was awful.

“I could see the light at the end,” he said.

Rob Lowe Heading to ‘Parks & Recreation’

rob_lowe_smiling_blindsWeeks ago when it was announced that Rob Lowe was leaving ABC’s ‘Brothers and Sisters,’ the spin from ABC was that they desperately wanted to keep Rob in the fold and would be working to develop a new television project for him.

Guess what? That was all a lot of hooey. Or exaggeration to the point of sounding more optimistic than true. Today, Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly reported that Rob Lowe will be joining the NBC sitcom, ‘Parks and Recreation.’ This is a great move by Rob, turning to comedy rather than jumping into another dramatic series. And if you think Rob’s not good at comedy, you don’t remember his letter-perfect imitation of Robert Wagner’s character #2 — as a younger man — in ‘Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.”
