Jose Reyes Headed Back to New York for Tests on Abnormal Thyroid
Filed under: Mets, NL East, MLB Injuries
For Mets star shortstop Jose Reyes, 2009 was a disaster. He lost all but 36 games due to a hamstring injury. For 2010, though, he was supposed to be in line to prove he would still play like a superstar. The triple in his first at-bat during an intrasquad game seemed to be a harbinger of things to come. Instead, Reyes has already received his first bad news of this campaign.
The 26-year-old speedster is currently headed back to New York for further tests on what has been reported as a hyperactive thyroid.
Reyes missed Thursday’s exhibition game against the Cardinals and was scheduled to return to the lineup Friday, but was scratched when his thyroid levels were found to be abnormal. He’ll undergo a series of tests through Monday, but the results may not be known for 48 hours. Basically, Reyes is not going to be back on a field until late next week — at the earliest.
Hyperthyroidism can be treated simply with medicine, but it’s possible more drastic measures need to be taken if the problem is serious. So this could end up being something that’s simply a small bump in the road for Reyes’ 2010 season, or it could be a problem that haunts him for a while. It’s far too early in the process to make any sort of a judgment now.
Reyes hit .297 with 19 triples (good for first in the majors), 16 homers, 68 RBI, 113 runs and 56 steals in 2008. He’s a two-time All-Star. Prior to the catastrophe that was 2009, he had played in at least 153 games for four straight seasons.

Source: Antrel Rolle on Verge of Signing With Giants
Filed under: Giants, NFL Free Agency
Former Cardinals safety Antrel Rolle, one of the biggest unrestricted free agents on the market, is on the verge of completing a deal with the New York Giants, an NFL source with knowledge of the situation told FanHouse.
Rolle was released by the Cardinals on Thursday, so that Arizona could sidestep a $4 million roster bonus owed him on March 5.
Several teams were immediately believed to have interest in Rolle, 27. He would make sense for the Giants given the team’s struggles on defense last season and the uncertain health status of safety Kenny Phillips, who missed the last 14 games of New York’s 2009 season with a left knee injury.

HTC Desire, Legend and HD Mini show up on Amazon UK, expected to arrive on April 1
Slowly but surely, HTC’s latest trifecta of handsets is making its way westwards. After appearing on Amazon’s Deutsche hub with a pre-order value of €519 ($707), the Desire has now reached the UK with an even steeper £528 ($795) price and an estimated arrival time of April 1. Let’s just hope this pattern doesn’t continue or we’ll be looking at a four-figure sticker when this thing comes all the way Stateside. The HTC Legend is also slated for an April 1 delivery and carries a price of £400 ($602), while the HD Mini will straggle a tiny bit with an April 14 launch and a palatable £369 ($556) price. All are without contractual obligations, so it’ll be interesting to see what incentives carriers can come up with to get us to jump on board.
[Thanks, Ron]

OMG WTFJeans! (video)
Smartphone in your back pocket? Cracked screen when you flop down on a wooden barstool. Front pocket? You’re asking for nasty scratches should you throw some keys in there. The fix, apparently, are wtfJeans, denim designed for gadget lovers. They sport micro-fiber pockets to protect those screens, a hidden memory stick pocket to keep your infos semi-secure, and even extra padding and protection in special places for male wearers. Granted, the styling is a bit… controversial, perhaps even Kris Kross inspired, but we’re digging the look — and the website, which encourages you to “wear them FTW” and offers special European beta pricing of €59 ($80) for the first 100 pairs. After that only 900 more will be made, and we’re guessing they’ll sell out quick, so order soon or you could be stuck wearing TLA-free pants. Drowsy unboxing video after the break!
[Thanks, Tomislav]

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ - ‘Perfect Little Accident’ Recap

(S06E16) I don’t understand why it took ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ fifteen minutes to run the credits on the bottom of the screen. They even included Katherine Heigl’s name, and she didn’t show up in the episode. How does that woman still get top billing? It’s great that Izzie wasn’t around, she would have been one too many. Luckily, the two mousy women weren’t around in this episode. Do all four Mercy Westers ever show up together anymore?
I have a feeling that this week the writers took a step backwards. There were a lot of funny moments, mostly led by Cristina, but some of the plotline wasn’t the strongest. The patients of the week didn’t steer the doctors in any direction like previous weeks. Instead, the three patients followed the title, and one little accident changed their lives for the better.

Cinematical Late Night: Fantastic Voyage Remake, Green Lantern 3D, HBO’s Rome Movie

Well, the first round of Cinematical Late Night didn’t bring out any pitchforks, so it looks like you can expect to find it Monday through Thursday a few times a week. If you’ve got any news bits you think might fit, please do use the contact form at the top of the page.
- Universal Studios Hollywood has a new King Kong 3D attraction on the horizon for this summer, and so they’ve begun teasing it accordingly. The video might be a little too Cloverfield-reminiscent, but I’d be game for seeing King Kong flatten Hollywood.
- Wesley Snipes tells MTV what he’d like to see in a hypothetical fourth Blade film while simultaneously taking a swipe at Blade: Trinity. Smart.
- With the screenplay more or less in the bag, James Cameron is now looking around for candidates to direct a remake of Fantastic Voyage. Don’t worry, Avatar haters, Cameron didn’t write it, he’s just producing.
- There’s been off and on talk of a big screen continuation of HBO’s Rome since its second season ended in 2007, but it looks like progress might finally be settling back into the on position.
- Geek Chic Daily has a fun list of facts about Alice in Wonderland creator Lewis Caroll. Did you know he has a disease named after him?

Ask Engadget: Best touchscreen-equipped ultraportable / tablet out there?
We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Sami, who apparently thinks that touchscreens are totally useful even in the frigid wilds of (gorgeous) Finland. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.
“I have a 13-inch MacBook and I love it. But I’m beginning to think it might be a little too big for me to carry around. I’ll be going to university soon, and I do random IT support in my downtime. So, the question: Which netbook / tablet / small laptop would you recommend for me? Touchscreen would be nice, 3G is a must. I’m not going to sell my MacBook so the new gadget doesn’t have to hold ‘my life’ in it. Thanks!”
We’ve yet to really see a touchscreen-based ultraportable with software to really take advantage, but who knows — maybe Sami has a few very specific uses where finger inputs will come in handy. Drop your advice in comments below, and be sure to wave your passport as you do.

Switched On: Why it’s time for an iTunes TV subscription
Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

In the 10 billionth song that Apple sold through iTunes, Johnny Cash’s “Guess Things Happen That Way”, a man other than Steve Jobs famous for black attire bemoans the happenstance of his romantic misfortune. But nothing could be further from the story of iTunes, in which Apple’s meticulously crafted ownership of the end-user experience led to a dominant position in music sales. Now, on the dawn of releasing a new device that could be to television shows what the iPod was to music, Apple has an opportunity to create as commanding a lead in TV distribution — if it is willing to again capitulate to consumers’ media consumption habits.
Apple has enjoyed great success with iTunes in part because it adopted the purchase-to-own model that had been so successful with CDs and records before them. However, Apple didn’t simply mirror that model. By allowing consumers to purchase the vast majority of songs as singles, it provided better perceived value, Such an option was also a natural fit for the iPod, where playlists made it trivial to create the digital equivalent of “mix tapes.” The iPod’s capacity for thousands of songs was also no match for most albums that typically had a dozen or so songs.
