Keepin’ it real fake: HP Mini 5101 knockoff is almost as good, almost as expensive as the real thing
Coveting a beautiful new netbook but can’t quite manage the $399 for a new HP Mini 5101/5102? Maybe this knock-off would fit your budget, looking more or less indistinguishable from the real thing. The ports have a slightly different layout (with some of them looking a wee bit askew) and the red hue here doesn’t have quite the same lustre of the real thing — but it is awfully close, right down to the chrome HP logo on the lid. How much would you pay for this piece of impressioned gadgetry? How about $337? Sure, the difference is enough to cover a copy of Heavy Rain, but could you live with yourself typing your e-mail every day on a lie? Beyond that, we have a suspicion this thing wouldn’t last much longer than the Origami Killer’s victims.

Viliv S10 Blade tablet unboxed and multitouched (video)
Viliv’s latest touchable objet d’gadget is the S10 Blade convertible tablet, a slim and sophisticated little thing that looks like it will elevate the company out of the ultraportable business and into the realm of things that take up a little bit more room in your messenger bag. Chippy over at UMPCPortal was granted access to a pre-production unit and has delivered this exhaustive unboxing and hands-on video, featuring no less than two minutes of multitouch scribbling. The device looks like it’s a very good size, the form factor looks simple and solid and, with an MSRP starting at just $699, we’re quite eager to see how it holds up in a full review. All in good time, readers. All in good time.

Gil Gerard and Erin Grey Are Sorta Back on ‘Buck Rogers’
Some of you really old folks like me might remember a science fiction series of the late 70’s/early 80’s called ‘Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.’ The stars were Gil Gerard as Buck and Erin Grey as Wilma Deering.
Well, they’re back and this time they’re Mr. and Mrs. Rogers. In a webisode series produced by James Cawley, who also did the ‘Star Trek‘ Phase II web series. Bobby Rice stars as the young Buck. A scene for the series was released on YouTube and in it, Buck is arguing with his parents about participating in World War I.
Based on the clip, this series seems more of an homage to the previous versions of the character than the one Gil Gerard starred in. It certainly adds an interesting wrinkle by having someone from our past trapped in our future.
However the series is set, it will likely be above and beyond SyFy’s craptacular ‘Flash Gordon’ series.
Video is after the jump.

Free Flick of The Day: ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’

Nostalgia can sometimes be a dangerous thing. Well, at least it is for me, because it’s usually why I end up watching an old ’80s gem like St. Elmo’s Fire, which SlashControl just added to their slate for the low, low price of free. So don’t bother telling me how crappy the movie is or how ridiculous the clothes are, because believe me I know. Still, though, it holds a place in my heart for giving me things like a movie quote I still love and use to this day, so at least it’s got that going for it … even if it is responsible for unleashing one of the most irritating songs known to man.
Directed by Joel Schumacher, and starring most of the pop-culture phenomenon known as The Brat Pack (Andrew McCarthy, Rob Lowe, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Emilio Estevez) this was the story of a bunch of pampered Georgetown University graduates struggling their way into adulthood (one reviewer dubbed it The Little Chill). So even though the film isn’t exactly a classic, it’s a biggie on the pop culture radar — so much so that in 2009, it was announced that Schumacher would be producing (along with Topher Grace) a Friends-style TV adaptation of the film.
But for me Fire belongs right where it is, and that is as an 80’s timepiece. Because sure, the film was universally panned, and, like most of the Brat Pack movies, it hasn’t held up as well as to be expected — but when it comes to reliving the 80’s, it is required viewing, after all.

Why the Fed’s Zero Interest Rate Policy May Be Dangerous
Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has pledged to keep interest rates near zero to stimulate the economy but is this policy doing more harm them good? Such low rates push banks to take more chances to get better returns and encourage investors to move money into into inherently riskier assets.

When raw anger at government turns violent (AP)
AP - The river of discontent running through America turned toxic in the fevered mind of the Pentagon shooter and others of his ilk. In a culture awash in conspiracy theories and raw anger at government, they are lone wolves who find a sense of community for their hate — yet act alone.

Blochbuster: Oscars 2010 With Style Expert Phillip Bloch - ‘Precious’ Moments

Phillip Bloch shares the hottest fashion scoop from Los Angeles as the stars prep for their big Oscar night.
Here’s Bloch with the latest from Hollywood:
Essence Magazine’s Black Women in Hollywood luncheon honored its favorite stars — Mo’Nique — the favorite for Sunday’s big night, as well as “Precious” co-star Gabourey Sidibe. The luncheon was hosted by Mikki Taylor, one of Essence’s star style icons, in celebration of her 30th anniversary with Essence.
Mo’Nique has rocked the red carpet at every award show thanks to Mikki, who has been styling her for all the appearances. Taylor has made the actress look fierce and fabulous every time she takes home a trophy.
Though there are no definite designer names as of yet, we were told she will be looking every bit the star, with Mikki dressing Mo’Nique once again for her big date with Oscar destiny.
After today’s luncheon, we’re headed to a party to celebrate “Precious” director Lee Daniels, held at the Andaz hotel — Hollywood’s hippest and hottest new night spot.
If the cast and crew of “Precious” have not had enough partying there will be one more luncheon in Mo’Nique’s honor on Saturday. After all what’s award show season without a bunch of parties to celebrate all the awards?
But after all these luncheons and cocktail parties, it’s hard to imagine anybody fitting into a dress . My favorite solution is shape shifters — with them any woman can get that perfect red carpet look.
My shapewear of choice, which I use on all my celebrity clients, is Hanes Smooth Illusions and L’eggs Profiles.
Both are a great value: Hanes is for the more upscale department store shopper and L’eggs is under $10 and available at drugstores and mass retail outlets nationwide.
I’m sure when Mo’Nique takes home the Oscar Sunday night she’ll be thanking her director, her stylist, her supporting cast and be extra thankful for the support of her body slimmers.
Check out the previous Blochbuster and stay tuned for the big night!
