Many states, including Michigan, New York and California have been forced to cut state and city workers in order to eliminate budget deficits – and teaching jobs have been lost in the…

You go there to buy shoes. And handbags. And jewelry. And jeans. And, now, the editors at Piperlime are hoping you’ll visit their site for a little light reading, too.

The site that sells footwear, accessories and clothing for men, women and children has launched Fresh Juice, a blog which include posts from guest editors including celeb stylist Rachel Zoe, weekly obsessions and behind-the-scenes stories.

Of course, there’s also some healthy self-promotion going on, as well. If an item from Piperlime appeared in a magazine, you’ll see it there. And, naturally, the obsessions are available to buy on the site, as well.

But the guest editor Q&As are full of time-killing fun: British fashion TV host Louise Roe can’t live without cinnamon dolce lattes from Starbucks (neither can we), she’s obsessed with ’70s-era Lauren Hutton [us, too!] and she uses words like “barfarama” (tubular!)

Oh, and on Fresh Juice, we finally found the answer to a question we’ve wondered about for years now: Where did they get the name Piperlime?

“Funny story,” the editors write. “We actually started out with a ton of great names. But none of them were quite right. So we picked a bunch of words we loved and then mixed and matched until, finally, ‘Piper’ met ‘lime.’ We knew right away, Piperlime was IT. Now, we can’t imagine being anything else.”

And, as if you need another excuse to shop, Piperlime is making it even easier with a new iPhone app.

East Tenn. State Wins Atlantic Sun Title

MACON, Ga. (AP) — East Tennessee State earned its second consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament, beating Mercer 72-66 in the Atlantic Sun Conference title game Saturday behind 18 points from reserve Justin Tubbs.

Tommy Hubbard added 14 points and tournament MVP Micah Williams had 13 for the fifth-seeded Bucs (20-14), who extended their longest winning streak of the season to six games. They were playing in their third Atlantic Sun championship game in the past four years.

The Bucs won this crown with a vastly different team than last season. East Tennessee State lost three starters to graduation and one to injury from its 2008-09 lineup.

Playing at home, No. 6 seed Mercer (16-17) lost in its first championship game appearance since 1996.

Williams grabbed nine rebounds for the Bucs, who shot 48.2 percent from the field. Isiah Brown had 12 points and Adam Sollazzo 11.

E.J. Kusnyer led Mercer with 16 points, while Brandon Moore added 13.

ETSU held James Florence and Danny Emerson, a duo that teamed for 33.6 points a game this season, to only 18. Emerson did have a game-high 13 rebounds, but also had four turnovers, mostly off ETSU’s traps when he got the ball inside.

The Bucs led 37-35 at halftime, were tied by the Bears twice in the second half and the teams exchanged the lead twice.

Mercer pulled within 62-61 with 1:44 left on Kusnyer’s off-balance 3-pointer from the left wing. But Tubbs answered 26 seconds later with a 3-pointer after double-clutching, and the Bucs led 66-61.

Emerson’s two free throws with 34.3 seconds left brought the Bears to 66-68, but the Bucs again made it a four-point margin with two free throws by Tubbs less than two seconds later.

Mercer’s last chance ended with a turnover, when Williams tipped away an inbounds pass from Florence to Emerson with 19.7 seconds left.

Mercer went 8 for 16 from the free throw line in the second half and endured a 1-for-6 stretch that prevented the Bears from tying or leading.

ETSU became the sixth A-Sun team to win consecutive championships and is the second fifth seed to do so. The Bucs are making consecutive NCAA tournament trips for the third time in program history (1989-1992 and 2003-04).

Winthrop Earns Its Ninth Trip to NCAA Tourney Since 1999

CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — At home or on the road, as the underdog or the dominating favorite, Winthrop just keeps winning Big South Conference titles.

The Eagles beat Coastal Carolina 64-53 on Saturday to win the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, their fifth trip in six seasons and ninth since 1999.

This time the third-seeded Eagles (19-13) were the underdogs. No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina (28-6) had set a school record for wins, earning the right to play the final in their tiny gym with nearly all the 1,236 fans wearing teal and roaring like a jetliner most of the game.

By the end, a few dozen Winthrop fans were chanting “We want Kansas” as its remarkable dynasty rolls on.

“When you come to Winthrop, you’ve got to know this is expected,” said Mantoris Robinson, the senior who led the Eagles with 14 points.

Winthrop used its signature smothering defense to win this one. The Chanticleers shot just 36.5 percent, well below their season average of 48.3 percent. Coastal Carolina didn’t score for a 7-minute stretch in the first half, then went scoreless again for a stretch late in the game.
