Hockey Friends, Foes Rally Support to Give Ryan Hope
Filed under: Minor League Hockey

On Feb. 3, Jeff and Dorie Christian picked up their 8-year-old daughter Ryan, their only child, from school and spent the rest of the day as a family. In their latest hometown of Independence, Mo. — Jeff is a 20-year pro hockey player now playing in the Central League — the Christians went to Walmart and watched Ryan practice with her basketball team.
“Just a nice, normal, beautiful day,” said Jeff, a 1988 second-round pick of the New Jersey Devils and now a player-assistant coach with the Missouri Mavericks.
The next day, Ryan came home early from school complaining of headaches. When her mother attempted to wake her a few hours later for a doctor’s appointment, the young girl was unresponsive. Ryan was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., where doctors stabilized her and performed a CAT scan and MRI. While at the hospital, she began to suffer seizures caused by extremely high blood pressure. More tests followed until the answer finally came.
Ryan had a tumor on her adrenal gland that needed to be removed — immediately. The diagnosis was Pedriatric Adrenalcortical Carcinoma, cancer near her kidney that is considered to be a one-in-a-million case. Today, she is under the care of the renowned physicians at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis.

Some lists suck. But this is the top list of them all!
Danny Granger, Channing Frye Suspended One Game
Saturday night’s altercation between the Suns and the Pacers will have lingering consequences for both teams, the league said in a release on Tuesday. Channing Frye and Danny Granger each received a one-game suspension, and several others were fined for their roles in the scuffle.
Earl Watson of the Pacers was fined $30,000 for “instigating and adding to the escalation of an on-court incident,” while Roy Hibbert and Jason Richardson are each $25,000 lighter in the wallet for “adding to the escalation of an on-court incident.”
Interestingly enough, Watson was the one that seemed to get things started, yet Granger, who came to his defense after Frye took it immediately to playoff level, was the one who received the suspension.
None of the Pacers’ remaining games matter in terms of having postseason implications, so the suspension to Granger — which will be enforced for tonight’s game against the Sixers — isn’t really that big of a deal.
Frye’s suspension, however? That one will come this Friday, when the Suns, who currently sit at fifth in the West, will host the conference’s top-seeded Lakers.

Shuttle’s ION 2-equipped XS35 shows off its slimline nettop credentials in hands-on video
In the market for a new HTPC? Then you’ll probably be wanting the slimmest possible enclosure that can still fit an optical drive and the grunt to power through HD video. Set aside some of your attention for Shuttle’s XS35, in that case, as this 3.3cm-thick slab of engineering contains an Atom D510 (yawn) paired with NVIDIA Ion 2 graphics (yay!), which should in concert deliver buttery smooth 1080p playback, whether through Flash or Blu-ray discs. The integrated optical drive can’t run those fancy discs from what we know, but you could easily swap it out with a slimline BR burner, jack in your favorite HDMI cable into the back, and have the perfect little movie box. It’s passively cooled so there’ll be no fan noise, and its price should be pretty endearing considering the aggressively priced competition from Zotac and Acer. See the XS35 in its metallic flesh after the break.
[Thanks, JC]

Jen-Hsun Huang is ‘looking forward’ to court date with Intel, sees no reason to settle (video)
Sometimes companies spar out their differences behind closed doors, and sometimes they have guys like Jen-Hsun Huang at their helms and the whole world gets to know how they feel and what they intend to do about it. The Tegrasaurus Rex has taken a recent interview with Fortune magazine as an opportunity to eloquently lay out his side’s case in the epic cross-licensing dispute between NVIDIA and Intel, and to let us all know that he sees “no reason” to settle with the Atom-making giant. Describing Intel’s argumentation as “completely nonsense,” NVIDIA’s fearless leader tell us that he’s eagerly anticipating the court clash scheduled for later this year. We can’t yet confirm whether or not he finished it off with a “bring your popcorn” instruction, but all his recorded words await in video form just after the break.

‘Gossip Girl’ - ‘The Hurt Locket’ Recap
(S03E13) “Time changes everything.” - Gossip Girl
It seems like a season ago when we last saw our favorite Upper Eastsiders, no? The last new episode aired on December 7, which was three months ago! That’s as long as we have to wait between a season finale and a season premiere!!! Our patience will be rewarded with ten consecutive weeks of fresh episodes!
‘The Debarted’ may have aired a lifetime ago, and if you missed the recap at the beginning of the episode, you may not remember much of what happened. Well, maybe except that jaw-dropping moment near the end where Chuck finds an unidentified woman at Bart’s grave. Is she his mother?

Girls on Film: Kathryn Bigelow, the First Female Best Director

In the words of Barbra Streisand, the time has come. After weeks of hope and pundit guesswork, Kathryn Bigelow became the first female to win the Best Director Oscar last night, just in time for International Women’s Day. In fact, The Hurt Locker did a whole lot more than just grab that one award. It grabbed six.
As anyone following the Oscar race knows — this wasn’t a clear-cut win, no matter how well the experts guessed. Everything was stacked against this film. Not only was The Hurt Locker another attempt for Bigelow to break into the boy’s club of testosterone-filled action drama, but it was also a low-budget, $11 million celebrity-free indie attempting to hold its own in the face of the “Iraq War Curse.” It was released over the summer to little fanfare from the super-successful Summit, and its box office take came nowhere close to its critical acclaim; it’s the lowest-grossing Best Picture winner of all time, in fact, and the yin to James Cameron’s wildly successful, highest-grossing yang. On top of that, it recently weathered questions of authenticity, and the fact that one of the film’s producers became the first to be banned from the ceremony.
Nevertheless, Kathryn Bigelow is the first woman to win a Best Director Oscar. It’s hard to believe that she is only the fourth woman to even earn a nomination, following in the footsteps of Lina Wertmüller for Seven Beauties in 1975, Jane Campion for The Piano in 1993, and Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation in 2003. It only took 82 years to get here.
