The Bowl Cut - Celebs Sport Retro Haircut for Spring
Filed under: Cuts & Style, Hair, Celebrity Hair

They may not be breaking out the mixing bowl for this hairstyle, but hip, young celebs and models are bringing back the ’70s with the bowl cut.
Stars like Agyness Deyn, Estelle, Parker Posey and Christina Ricci are sporting this retro hairdo. And while it may conjure up painful childhood images for many (”Mom, who’s the boy in that picture?”), you can breathe a sigh of relief that today’s bowl cut is much more flattering and feminine.
A cross between a modern-day bob and the heavy bangs of last season, today’s bowl style is edgier with tons of layers and texture, according to celebrity hairstylist Anh Co Tran of the Neil George Salon in Los Angeles. “This can be such a harsh cut, so it has to be very soft with a lot of movement.”
While Tran said his salon has seen a rise in pixies with bangs, the bowl cut is definitely becoming popular. “I’m working to break a couple of my clients into it,” he said.
But even if you didn’t have one growing up, this hair trend still may not be the best look for you, according to Tran. “You have to be very confident to wear it because it frames and exposes your face. It works well for oval, square or long faces and those with smaller features,” he said. “People with a large nose or a round face should stay away.”
When styling a bowl cut, use a round brush, but not too much on the ends, advises Tran. Instead, he suggests using a flat iron to add slight bend or waves for variety.
Whatever you do, Tran urges that you do not attempt to cut this style yourself. “Your stylist needs to create the look by cutting into the hair and razoring it” — two things that make this bowl cut ultra-modern.
What do you think of the bowl cut? Does it bring back too many bad hair memories?
Leave a comment below and take a look at other short and sweet cuts that celebs are flaunting.

Scouting Notes: The Curious Case Of Madison Bumgarner
Filed under: Giants, Prospects, Advanced Scouting, Spring Training
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — You have to take spring training performances with a large grain or salt, good or bad. No one is going to be too concerned with an ace pitcher who struggles in mid-March. However, for many young players the spring is far more important. It is a proving ground for them.
For young pitchers like Madison Bumgarner, who is looking to nail down the fifth spot in the Giants rotation, there are a number of questions to be answered. By the end of the 2009 season, many fans began to wonder what had happened to the powerful, front-of-the-rotation-starter type of stuff Bumgarner was said to have. His decreased velocity in his brief big-league stint was attributed to a long season, but now, early in the spring, the questions still linger.

Hunter, Baseball Need History Lesson
Around the turn of the 16th century, the first ship loaded with enslaved Africans arrived at a large island in the Caribbean that its European “discoverer,” Christopher Columbus, named Hispaniola in 1492. The ship was piloted by Spaniards.
A few years afterward, and more miles to the west, Cuba received its first cargo of humans from Africa as the Spanish continued to spread slavery through the seas. By 1526, bound and bloodied Africans who survived the holocaustic journey across the Atlantic were being deposited on the shores of what we now call South Carolina.
Hispaniola is no more. The western half of it is Haiti, where baseballs were once made. The eastern half is the Dominican Republic, where more foreign-born Major League Baseball players emanate from than any other country.
Maybe had Angels‘ All-Star outfielder Torii Hunter been aware of that history, he would not have dismissed Dominican ballplayers on Tuesday as mere “imposters” of African-American ballplayers like him by saying:
“People see dark faces out there, and the perception is that they’re African American. They’re not us.
“Even people I know come up and say, ‘Hey, what color is Vladimir Guerrero? Is he a black player?’ I say, ‘Come on, he’s Dominican. He’s not black.’ ”

Ask Engadget: Best (useful) WiFi network detector?
We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Mitchell, who couldn’t care less if you have a problem with his question. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.
“I just got a new laptop and am looking for a WiFi detector. The catch is that I want one that will tell me if the network it is detecting is open or not. I can’t fathom the point of one that doesn’t tell you that information. If posted, this will probably generate a lot of snark, but whatever, I just want to be able to find open networks!”
You know, we appreciate the honesty here. And we totally feel you. If anyone out there has found a fantastically useful WiFi detector, throw your recommendation(s) in comments below!

Android’s American market share soars, WinMo pays the price
Mobile manufacturer and platform market share stats for the US are in for the month of January thanks to comScore, and as usual, they tell a fascinating (and somewhat unpredictable) story of what’s actually going on at the cash registers. Motorola — which has long since fallen off its high horse on the global stage — still maintains a commanding presence in the American market by representing some 22.9 percent of all subscribers, though that’s down 1.2 percent from October 2009; that’s particularly interesting in light of the Droid’s success, and a possible sign that smartphones still aren’t on the cusp of dominating the phone market overall. Samsung recently touted the fact that it had held onto the States’ overall market share crown, though Sammy was undoubtedly referring to sales, not subscribers — in other words, there are still a ton of legacy RAZRs out there inflating Moto’s stats.
Turning our attention to smartphone platforms, BlackBerry OS, iPhone, and Android all saw gains, while Windows Mobile and Palm both saw significant downturns. You might use Palm’s loss of 2.1 percent of overall market share in a single quarter as a big nail in webOS’ coffin, but we’re inclined to believe this includes legacy devices — and considering the huge installed base of Palm OS-based handsets (Centros, for instance) that are coming off contract these days, it’s neither surprising nor alarming to see that kind of drop. Android’s gain, meanwhile, likely comes in large part from WinMo’s whopping four percent loss — it’s no secret that WinMo 6.x is well past its expiration date with customers leaving in droves (even before Windows Phone 7 Series announcement), and our informal observations lead us to believe that many of those folks are heading for Android. After all, it’s kind of convenient that Android gained 4.3 percent and WinMo lost about the same, isn’t it? BlackBerrys still dominate the American smartphone landscape, and the iPhone market looks like it might be mature for the time being — Apple added just 0.3 percent to its market share in the quarter, possibly a sign that folks are holding out for whatever Cupertino brings us come Summer. Is this a sign that Palm needs to step up its game yet again? Undoubtedly — but at the same time, we wouldn’t call the loss of those Palm OS subscribers a death knell just yet.

ABC Gets Flamed Over Two Seconds of News Footage on Toyota Recalls
Two seconds may not seem like much in the real world (in fact, there’s two seconds you’ll never get back right there). In TV, however, it can mean an eternity (there goes another two seconds).
ABC News has admitted that footage from Brian Ross’ report on recalled Toyota and their sudden acceleration problems contained a misleading shot of a speedometer.
Ross and Southern Illinois University professor David Gilbert went for a ride in a Toyota to recreate the supposed electrical failure that causes the sudden acceleration. Footage of the speedometer’s needle spiking was actually taken when the car was idle and not while the car was in motion.

Cinematical Seven: Movie Employees Who Go Off Task

I really want to see Green Zone. Not because I’m dying to see Matt Damon go all Jason Bourne on some WMDs (though I am), but because I have a huge soft spot for movies about employees who go off task. I’m not talking about the simple movies that feature employees having fun at work (here’s looking at you, Empire Records), I’m talking about movies that feature employees going totally rogue, sticking it to the man and so forth.
Why do I love movies like this? I don’t know, really. I’ve got no complaints about any of the jobs I’ve ever held, so it’s not as though I have contempt for the workplace establishment. I’ve always had a great relationship with my bosses, so I’m not out to see the big man up top get shafted in the end. I guess I just like to see employees having fun, be it by shooting terrorists in the face or giving the metaphorical finger to their corporate overlords. Considering I could have filled this list 3 times over with the roster I jotted down, I’m not the only one. But these are indeed my favorite employee cutups.
