Mission Makeover: Easy Going Girl Gets a Glam Edge

Strolling the streets of Los Angeles in black leggings, a white tee and a sweatshirt, Hannah had no idea what was coming: Mission Makeover.
Gorgeous from the get-go with a cool, casual style, our team wanted to give the Cleveland native more of an edge. Translation: go from comfortable casual to wearable glam slam.
Makeup artist and hair stylist Roberta Inez started the transformation by smoothing on a tinted moisturizer to even Hannah’s complexion. Offering sheer coverage with a touch of color, tinted moisturizers are perfect for day because they almost always include an SPF.
Next, Inez gave Hannah a soft, smoky eye that can be worn during the day without looking too overdone. She started with an eye shadow primer, which helps to even the skin tone on the lids so the shadow looks richer. It also helps the color adhere to the lids longer (read: your shadow won’t do a disappearing act come noon).
On the lids, Inez applied a soft gold eye shadow to the inner corners (she also swept it along the brow bone) and a rich green to the outer corners, smudging the color to appear softer. Both the upper and lower lash lines were rimmed with a rich brown shadow. To create a liquid effect, Inez lightly dipper her liner brush into water, dragged it across the brown shadow and applied. After curling the lashes, a few coats of black mascara finished the eyes.

Lips and cheeks should be subtle when wearing a smoky eye — be it soft like Hannah’s or daringly bold. Inez dusted a shimmering bronzer across Hannah’s cheekbones to warm her complexion, and then slicked her lips with a sheer, barely-there lip gloss.

Inez took Hannah’s hair from flat to fabulous by adding layers. By cutting a few strategic layers, she created natural volume around the crown. After blowdrying the hair straight and flat ironing a few on the under pieces, Inez set three sections of the hair-both sides and the back-in large Velcro rollers.
She sprayed them with hairspray and left them in for 10 minutes. When she removed the rollers, Hannah’s hair was full of soft, moveable volume. To finish the look, she used a medium-barrel curling iron to curl Hannah’s long, sweeping bangs and flip the ends.
To fit her new look, stylist Jordan Feldman picked the perfect little black dress and paired it with an ankle boot. The belted waist emphasized her petite frame, while the scooped neckline revealed just enough. Feldman accessorized with three necklaces of varying length and nothing more. When accessorizing, stick with the minimum.
If you opt for big earrings, skip the necklace and add only a few stacked bangles (if at all). With lots of neck jewelry, keep earrings small and understated.
Hannah’s final look: a little bit edgy and a little bit glam.

Maryland, USC, Syracuse Among Those On Outside Looking in
Filed under: Women’s Basketball
In the end, coach Brenda Frese had no excuses and didn’t offer any for her Maryland team, which, one season removed from a top seed and an Elite Eight appearance, failed to get an NCAA tournament bid when the draw was announced Monday.
Granted, the Terps (19-12) lost 4,000 points of offense, when Kristi Toliver and Marissa Coleman graduated from last year’s team, but Maryland did itself no favors by finishing ninth in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 5-9 league mark.
“From our end the only ones to blame is us in terms of not being able to see things through,” said Frese last night. “At the same point, with this young team, to be able to grow and develop like they did and win 19 games and still have an opportunity to play in postseason in the WNIT is a chance for us to continue to practice and develop.”
The 10-member NCAA women’s basketball committee made interesting choices across the nation in distributing 33 at-large bids.
The panel extended two of the last bids to Green Bay (27-4) of the Horizon League and to Arkansas-Little Rock (26-6) of the Sun Belt, while leaving out such notable teams as Southern California (19-12), Syracuse (22-10), Boston College (17-15) and Wake Forest (18-13).
Jane Meyer, the senior women’s administrator and chair of the women’s basketball committee, said Green Bay and Arkansas-Little Rock, which received its first ever bid, were singled out for their willingness to schedule tough teams and their success against those schedules.

Sacramento: Stanford’s Been Here Before
Stanford won’t have to go farther than a two-hour bus ride to pave a path back to its third straight Final Four. But the roadblocks are plentiful.
The Cardinal (31-1) are the No. 2 overall seed in the tournament by virtue of Sunday’s Pac-10 tournament championship in Los Angeles. Stanford is scheduled to play at home for the first two rounds, opening Saturday with No. 16 seed UC Riverside, and is the only team in its bracket with a host bid.
Should the Cardinal advance as expected, they will head to Sacramento.
Unlike Connecticut, the team that Stanford has been looking up at all year, the Cardinal have had their health issues. Jayne Appel (pictured right) has battled knee, foot and ankle injuries this season. Experienced guards JJ Hones and Mel Murphy have experienced limited playing time with persistent knee swelling. Starting point guard Jeanette Pohlen had an ankle injury.
Stanford is a No. 1 seed for the first time since 1998, when it made history by becoming the first No. 1 seed ever to lose to a No. 16 seed when Harvard pulled off the now infamous upset at Maples Pavilion.
Texas A&M (25-7) lurks on the other end of the bracket. The Aggies won the Big 12 tournament for the second time in three years last weekend in Kansas City, in the process handing Nebraska its first loss of the season.

A&M has won nine of 10 games, the only loss in that span a two-point loss against Baylor in College Station.

Olé, Contoso: Windows Phone Marketplace will integrate carrier-branded stores

So we noticed this odd “Contoso” label on Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace press image earlier today, and we finally got to the bottom of it: Microsoft’s Todd Biggs says it’s a placeholder entry for a carrier-branded section of the store — instead of having a separate portal and / or store, Verizon or AT&T or whoever can simply sell their content to customers directly through Marketplace. So why Contoso? Todd says it’s a random trademark owned by Microsoft used in place of carrier names that doesn’t actually mean anything, although we think it suggests adventure, white roadsters, and finely-groomed mustachios. And now you know.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II firmware 2.0.3 arrives at last to free us from frame rate hell
It’s been obvious from day one that it was possible, but after a couple of years of oh-so-painful 30 FPS recording on the EOS 5D Mark II, Canon is finally coming through with its long-promised 2.0.3 update that brings 29.97 FPS and 24 FPS (23.976, to be precise) 1080p recording at last. Even the VGA mode has been swapped to a 29.97 actual rate, and PAL mode has a flat 25 FPS and 23.976 FPS as well. Additional tweaks include a manual volume adjustment (as opposed to the automatic gain the cameras usually employ), a brightness or RGB histogram display (this function, like some of these other features, has been available for a while as a hack), shutter and aperture priority modes have been added for movie shooting, and the audio sampling ramp has been bumped from 44.1KHz to 44KHz. The bad news: now you don’t have any excuses for not shooting that heartwrenching mumblecore masterpiece you’ve been telling everyone you’re working on. Hit up the source link for the download instructions.

Bush Sr. and Bush Jr. Have a Heart to Heart
I’ve always wondered what it would be like to watch George Bush Sr. and George Bush Jr. have a sit-down. It must the most awkward fly-on-the-wall conversation since King Richard III told Henry Stafford he was going to have to make some “cutbacks.”
Now thanks to the people at Funny or Die, now I know. And knowing is half the battle.
The site released some cutting room floor footage from their recent “Presidential Reunion” PSA directed by Ron Howard featuring some funny, improvised dialogue between Dana Carvey and Will Ferrell as the presidential father and son.

Kick-Ass Females of SXSW: Chloe Sevigny

With so many female-driven films and strong roles at this year’s fest, and in the spirit of the opening night film, we’ll be profiling some of the most kick-ass females representing at SXSW this week. First up: Barry Munday and Mr. Nice star Chloe Sevigny.
Chloe Sevigny has been a staple of the indie film scene ever since her debut in Larry Clark’s Kids, one of a handful of young actresses whose careers are comprised of consistently challenging roles and few critical missteps. She’s worked with a litany of modern-day auteurs (including Werner Herzog, Harmony Korine, Woody Allen, David Fincher, and Lars von Trier), and stars on HBO’s unorthodox drama Big Love. Naturally, Sevigny ranks atop our list of the bold and daring ladies representing this year’s SXSW slate.
Cinematical caught up with Sevigny the day after Barry Munday, the first of her two films at the festival, debuted. (Her second film, Mr. Nice, premiered the next day.) Barry Munday, written and directed by Chris D’Arienzo (Broadway’s Rock of Ages), is the crowd-pleasing tale of a verifiable douche bag (Patrick Wilson) who only truly becomes a man when he loses his testicles in a horrible incident; Sevigny and Judy Greer star as two polar opposite sisters who become involved in Barry’s life. As the packed premiere screening at Austin’s Paramount theater attested, SXSW was probably the perfect place to debut the off-the-wall comedy, which features a memorable scene involving Sevigny, a strip club, and the classic Whitesnake ditty, “Here I Go Again On My Own.” (Read Peter Martin’s review here.)
