‘Project Runway’ Shakes Things up for Season 8
Filed under: TV News
In addition to the usual stresses and strains, bitchiness, in-fighting, and flashes of sheer design brilliance that we’ve come to expect from the show, ‘Project Runway’ fans can expect a few changes when it returns for its eighth season tonight. In an interview with tvguide.com, host and creator Heidi Klum dropped some hints as to what we can expect.
First up, the show’s now starting at 9PM ET instead of 10PM ET (check your DVRs, people), and is 90-minutes long instead of 60. Klum said she always thought the original start time was too late, so now we can all watch a longer show and still catch up on our beauty sleep a whole half hour earlier than before.
Plus, having an extra 30 minutes in the show means we’ll get to see much more of the judges’ deliberation: “Elimination day is all day, but on the show it was down to about 10 minutes. … Now we have the freedom to show it much longer than we ever could,” says Klum.
After seven seasons the competing designers are, by now, knowledgeable fans of the show who know what’s coming and know (or think they know) how to play the game. So, this season will throw them some curve balls, such as the first-ever hat challenge, and Klum says this time around “we are going a little harder on the designers and with the challenges. We just try to pump it up a little more and give the designers twists. … We need to surprise them too, and not just viewers at home.”

Cinematical Late Night: Justin Bieber, Zach Galifianakis, Meatballs Remake

- Justin Bieber as Christopher Robin? Zach Galifianakis as Eeyore? That’s how Paste sees things in a gallery of Disney characters and the stars who were born to play them in live-action versions. I would definitely see a version of Lady and the Tramp where Lady Gaga plays duel roles as both Siamese cats. Disney if you please…
- Speaking of Galifianakis, here’s a real movie he’s set to produce and appear in: Reply All, a comedy which will be scripted by Phil Johnston (the upcoming Cedar Rapids). You can guess the plot by the title, I’m sure, but just in case you’re one of the few people who’s never done this, it involves a personal email reply that accidentally goes out to a whole bunch of people rather than one person.
- Galifianakis’ Dinner for Schmucks adversary, Steve Carell, has his own new comedy to produce and star in. It’s called Raised by Wolfs, and I will try to guess the plot of this one, too: a guy tries to adapt to normal society after being reared by a crazy family with the last name Wolf.

On ‘Hell’s Kitchen,’ the Contestants Have a Perfect Night (VIDEO)
What would be the most amazing thing that could happen on ‘Hell’s Kitchen’? Well, that would probably have to be an episode of the show where chef Gordon Ramsay doesn’t hyperventilate and scream at everyone. And amazingly, that’s exactly what happened tonight (Tue., 8PM ET on Fox).
[Spoiler alert.]
The final four contestants worked well together tonight, and didn’t have a single dish sent back during dinner service. Chef Ramsay had nothing but praise for them. (Admittedly, he was still sort of shouting his praise at the cooks, but still — that’s about as close as he gets to being “nice,” so we’ll take it.)
“Well done, everybody,” Ramsay said. “THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT WE’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR.” (Note the slight, um, reversion to yelling there.)
The players couldn’t believe that they were getting kind words from Ramsay. ” … Really?” contestant Holli said.

Cinematical Seven: Great Female Spies and Secret Agents

Salt opened this past weekend to middling reviews and middling box office; the consensus appears to be that people are more or less in the middle on it. But it does do one thing well; it features a female secret agent who can handle herself. She’s not used to seduce male bad guys, nor is she made to slip behind enemy lines. And she definitely, definitely does not need to be rescued by a male spy. (This is probably because the project was originally conceived for a male star, but nonetheless, it’s a step in the right direction.) Here are seven of the best female spies and secret agents before Salt.
1. Alicia Huberman (Ingrid Bergman) in Notorious (1946)
Alicia is a reluctant spy. After her father is accused of being a traitor and commits suicide, Alicia is called in to help make up for this smudge on the family name. She is asked to woo and marry Alexander Sebastian (Claude Rains), who may be running a Nazi group in South America and dealing in uranium. Unfortunately, before all this can take place, Alicia falls madly in love with her contact man, Devlin (Cary Grant). A better spy might notice when someone tries to poison her, but Alicia can be forgiven for being distracted. Screenwriter Robert Towne loosely borrowed this scenario for Tom Cruise and Thandie Newton in Mission: Impossible II (2000).

News Roundup: Gabriel Macht Joins USA Network Pilot, ‘Glee’ Casts New Faces and More
Filed under: TV News
Gabriel Macht, known to many for his role in ‘The Spirit,’ is getting a very ‘Legal’ state of mind.
Macht has joined the cast of USA Network’s new procedural, ‘A Legal Mind.’ According to Ausiello Files, Macht will play Harvey, a successful attorney at a well-respected Manhattan law firm. Macht’s character hires Mike (Patrick J. Adams), a slacker — yet smart — college kid who doesn’t have a law degree.
The pilot episode was written by Aaron Krosh (’The Deep End’). Krosh will serve as an executive producer along with Doug Liman, Gene Klein and David Bartis.

Joseph Gordon Levitt and His Hair Rule the New ‘Hesher’ Clip

If not for Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt would have been the best part of Inception. JGL’s portrayal of the clean-cut and no-nonsense Arthur has finally shown mainstream audiences what film geeks have known for some time — this guy’s a damn good actor. I still have a hard time seeing him and not thinking of little Tommy Solomon on Third Rock from the Sun, but that’s starting to change with each new role.
I think I might be able to shake the image of the adorably cute pre-teen Joseph Gordon-Levitt once and for all after seeing this new clip for Spencer Susser’s film Hesher. The footage played at Comic-Con over the weekend, which definitely seems strange for a Sundance film, but as Twitch points out it was almost assuredly to capitalize on Natalie Portman being in attendance (she also appears in the film) and JGL’s Inception buzz.
You can check out our own Erik Childress’ review to get the full breakdown of what Hesher’s all about, but the basically the film follows a 13-year-old boy whose mother has died in a car accident. He meets Hesher (Gordon-Levitt), an angry, tattooed loner who shows him a lot about life — most of it not necessarily good.
The film played Sundance earlier this year, earning mostly mixed reviews. Newmarket Films has picked Hesher up for distribution, but no official release date has been announced.

‘Persons Unknown’ - ‘Smoke and Steel’ Recap
Filed under: Recaps, Summer TV
(S01E07) Oooooooooo, now this conspiracy is a lot bigger than we thought. We’re talking ‘X-Files’ territory here.
I think we all guessed that it was some sort of secret experiment/test/plan/whatever, but I don’t think we could have guessed that it has been going on for 50 years. So our kidnappees aren’t just stuck in a small town for ransom, or because they were chosen at random for an experiment, they were chosen because each one of them could have great influence in the world.
Again: Oooooooooooooooooo.

Have We Met Before? — The ‘Avengers’ Reunions

An amusing little conversation popped up on the twitter, and (of course) it centered around the nerd-tastic appearance of the entire Avengers team on the 2010 Comic-Con stage together. We still have the Thor and Captain America flicks to look forward to (which is good because The Avengers isn’t due until 2012), but that means we’ll have plenty of time to contemplate the previous permutations of this Marvel-ous squad.
In other words, here are the movies in which some of “The Avengers” have previously appeared together. (And please, nobody say “You forgot Iron Man 2!”)
The Nanny Diaries (Captain America & Black Widow)
The Perfect Score (Captain America & Black Widow again!)
The Spirit (Nick Fury & Black Widow)
S.W.A.T. (Nick Fury & Hawkeye)
Zodiac (Iron Man & The Hulk)
Bonus Nerdy Picks
Angel {episode 1.11} (Hawkeye & Whedonman)
Buried (Deadpool, Green Lantern & Hannibal King)
The Assassination of Jesse James… (Hawkeye & Justin Hammer)
Cellular (Captain America & Abigail Whistler)
In Good Company (Black Widow & Agent Coulson)
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (Iron Man & old Batman)
Lakeview Terrace (Nick Fury / Frozone / Shaft & Nite Owl II)
Lords of Dogtown (Hawkeye & The Joker)
Not Another Teen Movie (Captain America / Johnny Storm / & Jimmy Olson)
O Brother Where Art Thou? (Elastigirl & Samuel Sterns)
Ocean’s 11 (War Machine, Jason Bourne, Venom and the old goofy Batman with nipples)
The Prestige (Wolverine vs. Batman!)
Shutter Island (Hulk and Rorshach)
Star Trek (Thor and old Hulk)
Wonder Boys (Iron Man and old Spider-Man)
I’m sure there are more out there. Who’d I miss? Feel free to break out all the X-Men if you like! (Note: “bonus nerdy picks” must contain at least one (1) Marvel character. Otherwise it’s totally cheating.)

‘Bones’ Cast at Comic-Con: Handling the Bones-Brennan "Break-Up"
David Boreanaz is a Comic-Con veteran, and he reflected on that when he sat down for the ‘Bones’ panel earlier today.
He first came to SDCC first in 1997 for ‘Buffy,’ when his character of Angel was all broody, wore dark clothes and leather pants. “I just f—-ing love the leather pants,” he said wistfully. He thinks it would be great to see an ‘Angel’ movie. “Everyone loves the vampire lore and mystique and mystery.”
The big storyline that people in the hall were curious about was the “break up” between longtime partners Booth and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) - Booth poured his heart out to Brennan and offered to catch her when she falls “and she decided not to even fall” - Boreanaz pouted about how it turned out. He said that Booth will always be in love with Bones, he’s just trying to make her jealous. He might come back with a new love interest to do just that/

SDCC: ‘Jackass 3D’ is Nasty … But Still Kinda Hilarious

After watching the Jackass crew destroy each other for years as a TV show and then through a number of films, I thought by now I’d be sick of the shtick. Yeah, it was funny the first 47 times you smashed that midget in the face with a pie full of nails, but could the guys — including their fearless leader Johnny Knoxville — somehow find enough originality and nasty humor to keep things going through yet another film? Well, after watching eight minutes of footage (in 3D, no less) I feel pretty safe in saying that, yes, these Jackass boys still know how to make you want to vomit within two minutes flat.
The footage was screened in the front of a giant trailer truck set up in an open parking lot in downtown San Diego — where, among other things, you could hang out in the sun, play ping-pong, drink beers (out of these really cool paper bag-style koozies — see image above), chat up the cast, eat free burgers and listen to cool music. What more could you want in life? I mean, really. Two of the several eight-or-so-minute screenings were filmed for audience reaction TV spots, and it’s definitely not hard to get an audience reaction when it comes to Jackass. Let’s just say the name of the main stunt we were shown was “Bungee Poo Cocktail”, and it involved Steve-O sitting inside a port-o-potty filled with, um, poo, before being bungeed up in the air. I don’t think you want me to tell you what happened next.
And it was in 3D.
Was the 3D better than Avatar? Maybe I’ll let you decide on October 15th. But know that Jackass fans have nothing to worry about; these guys may have aged a bit, but they’re just as sick and twisted as they’ve always been … with or without the 3D.
Check out a gallery from the Jackass 3D event below.
