Geeky Good Looking Celebrities
Filed under: Beauty, Celebrity, Celebrity Beauty, Celebrity Style
Geeks are definitely having their moment. In a 24/7 wired world, where knowledge is the currency of the day, it pays to be clever, smart and passionate — and to look good doing it.
This summer, StyleList and AOL are saluting geeks, those people who know who they are and aren’t afraid to let the world know it. We’re talking people like Tina Fey, Justin Timberlake, Natalie Portman, Ashton Kutcher, and Kristen Bell, who have all made it cool not only to be smart, but to look the part, too.
AOL will present the Geek Awards in Los Angeles Aug. 18, when we will celebrate the people who geek out over the things they love the most. (Watch the pre-show live on PopEater.com.) Until then, look for stories on StyleList explaining the finer points of geek chic, or taking a hardcore look at the science behind some of beauty and fashion’s most ingenious ideas.
Geeky Good-Looking Celebrities
If there was a standard fashionista’s dictionary, Natalie Portman’s photograph would be next to the word, “smart.” The 29-year-old actress’s riveting performances in films including “The Professional,” “Star Wars,” and “V for Vendetta,” aren’t the only thing that has us mesmerized.
From the Harvard grad’s intelligence to her antipoverty and environmental activism to her all-around beauty, we can’t keep our eyes off of Portman (or stop lusting over those thick brows, lush lashes, flawless complexion, and plump pout).
Geeky Good-Looking Celebrities
Justin Timberlake has come a long way since his days as a Mouseketeer on Disney’s “The All New Mickey Mouse Club.” And while he had teenage girls swooning as the curly, blonde-haired, blue-eyed member of *NSYNC, we always knew that deep down inside of J.T. existed a geek.
With the 29-year-old singer-actor set to bring Sean Parker (co-founder of Napster and former President of Facebook) to life on the big screen this fall in “The Social Network,” we sure hope he won’t ditch the bow ties, blazers, and dark specs we’ve grown to love him wear.
Geeky Good-Looking Celebrities
Whether we’re falling out of our seats laughing at her hysterical one-liners as Liz Lemon on “30 Rock,” Kate Holbrook in “Baby Mama,” or Sarah Palin on “Saturday Night Live,” Tina Fey makes being a super nerd seem oh, so, attractive!
And while we love a woman who’s confident and sexy in a pair of black, horn-rimmed glasses, we have to admit that we enjoy seeing more of the 49-year-old comedian’s big, doe eyes.
Geeky Good-Looking Celebrities
With his thick-rimmed specs, tailored suits, and perfectly coiffed curls, “The Mentalist” star Simon Baker obviously can read between the lines when it comes to geek chic.
The 40-year-old Aussie actor has hit the big time in Hollywood with his smart style and boyish good looks — proving that nerd style is timeless.
Geeky Good-Looking Celebrities
Behind Rosario Dawson’s big brown eyes and gorgeous grin, lies a closeted geek. The New York City-bred beauty is a self-professed Trekkie who is also the co-creator of the comic book mini-series “O.C.T.: Occult Crimes Taskforce.”
We don’t know what’s sexier? An actress that speaks Klingon and can hold her own at Comic-Con or a star that can give anyone a run for their money on the red carpet with her natural beauty.
Geeky Good-Looking Celebrities
As one-third of the Jonas Brothers, Joe created a lane for himself by jumping on the geek chic bandwagon with these retro-inspired frames. And while the hot young star’s vocal and acting capabilities guarantee him longevity in the industry, he may want to consider a career in modeling.
We can get used to seeing this Jonas Brothers’ face in the pages of GQ, Men’s Vogue, or Esquire. Can’t you?
Geeky Good-Looking Celebrities
Jennifer Connelly’s schoolgirl charm in films like “Requiem for a Dream,” “A Beautiful Mind,” and “The Day The Earth Stood Still” make it very difficult for anyone to keep their eyes off of her.
The 39-year-old actress, who’s established a following for her unglamorous, nurturing characters, is also fluent in Italian and French and has studied at Yale and Stanford.
Geeky Good-Looking Celebrities
With Demi Moore as his wife, Ashton Kutcher is proof that geeks really do come out on top.
After getting his start modeling on the runways of Paris and Milan and even donning Calvin Klein underwear, Kutcher unleased his geeky side as Michael Kelso in the sitcom “That ’70s Show” — sparking a series of big and small screen features that propelled his nerdom.
And he’s maintained his celeb geek king status by becoming the first Twitter user to scoop up 1 million followers, peddling Nikon Coolpix cameras, and launching an animated web series called “Blah Girls.”
Geeky Good-Looking Celebrities
Kristen Bell had us all rediscovering our inner geek when she starred as a teenage detective in the UPN drama “Veronica Mars.”
The pint-sized actress is an animal lover and vegetarian who’s a huge activist and recently went shoeless on TOMS Shoes One Day Without Shoes to bring awareness to poverty-stricken children who risk infection and disease while working barefoot.
Geeky Good-Looking Celebrities
Unlike his character Vincent Chase on HBO’s “Entourage,” in reality Adrian Grenier is a lot less flashy and a bit more down to earth.
The 34-year-old actor’s geeky good looks and on-camera charm has provided the perfect platform for his eco-living and animal conservation activism. How’s that for using what you’ve got to get where you want?

Kate Hudson Wears Jumpsuit, Sports Bedhead

Where are Goose and Iceman when you need ‘em?
Giving new meaning to the term “flight suit,” Kate Hudson donned a less-than-flattering “Top Gun“-esque jumpsuit at London’s Heathrow Airport.
And here we thought chaps and heel-less shoes were the bottom of the in-flight fashion barrel.
In addition to the baggy getup, the usually chic Hudson hit turbulence with her sloppy, straight-outta-bed hair bun and incongruent accessories including suede boots, oversized sunglasses (where are the aviators?), and a printed scarf tied to her boho fringed handbag.
Here’s hoping homegirl was wearing something a bit more stylish underneath her coveralls. Lord knows there was room!
Clearly, she didn’t read our advice on what to wear for a long flight.
And in other fashion faux pas news, 76-year-old Giorgio Armani hit the beach in a white Speedo.

With summer slowly coming to an end, its time to switch out our favorite beachy waves for fall’s sleeker, straighter strands like those spotted on the runways of Anna Sui, Vena Cava, and J. Mendel. It Cosmetics’ New Brow Power Brow Pencil Helps Eyebrow Hair Grow Back
Filed under: Beauty, News, Makeup
I’m reporting live from Cosmoprof North America in Las Vegas, the biggest beauty tradeshow in the U.S. Every day, I’ve been tasked with picking my favorite new emerging beauty brand, so here’s my second obsession: It Cosmetics‘ Brow Power pencil, which not only enhances your brows, but helps eyebrow hair grow back, too.
Time to grow back those brows, ladies. A runway model at Narciso Rodriguez’s Fall 2010 show exemplifies the bold brow look. Photo: Getty Images
As anyone who has ever gone too far with their tweezers knows, once a brow hair is plucked, it may not return.
Yes, we all have those pesky hairs that always seem to pop back and obscure our precious arch, but oftentimes after tweezing your brows will become shorter and thinner than before. When I look back at pictures of myself as a teenager — before I knew what a tweezer was — I’m always shocked by how much fuller, darker and longer my brows were then than they are today.
There’s a reason for that: During the plucking process, the hair follicle can become damaged, which makes it unable to produce a hair.
It Cosmetics co-founder Jamie Kern knows the drill. After working as a news anchor for years, her brows were not what they used to be. “I’ve gotten my brows plucked so many times over the years that my left brow was almost bald,” Kern told me from the floor of Cosmoprof North America.
So she created a brow pencil to help solve this problem. It Cosmetics’ new Brow Power Universal Eyebrow Pencil contains patent-pending brow enhancing technology to help hairs grow back. “Our ingredients specifically target hair growth,” says Kern. Two years in development, the company turned to natural hair growth ingredients like saw palmetto, nettle extract, horsetail extract, green tea extract, and grapeseed extract help restore the brow hair follicles.
This product comes just in time for fall, and the bold brows that are one of the season’s beauty hallmarks. Directional shows like Chanel, Prada, and Narciso Rodriguez showed the type of dark, super-defined arches that were first made popular by Brooke Shields in the ’70s and Madonna in the ’80s. Already showing up on magazine covers and ad campaigns, the “now” brow is dark and enunciated, precisely groomed and perfectly polished.
I tried the Brow Power pencil last night and was struck by its ease of use.
The key is its unique shape: The tip is oval so you can turn it two different directions to get a thick line or a thin line, depending on where you are applying it. I turned the pencil horizontal to color the slender outer edges of my brows, and then vertically to shade the thicker inner corners.

The crayon-like texture goes on very lightly, so you can layer for the particular oomph you’re after — whether it’s a more natural look or bold a “statement” brow. The formula is smudge-proof and waterproof (I wore it on the treadmill this morning and I was the only thing running!), making it perfect for those on the go, along with those going through menopause.
“I’ve met many women who are afraid of their brows coming off during a hot flash,” said Kern. “Brow Power was developed with this in mind.”
Another segment this product aims to please is women undergoing chemotherapy. Hair loss is a side effect of many chemotherapy treatments, and brow-loss is common also.
With that in mind, for every Brow Power pencil sold, It Cosmetics is donating one pencil to the Look Good, Feel Better program to help women face the effects of cancer with confidence.
The charity is close to Kern’s heart, as members on both sides of her family have battled with cancer. “I thought brows was the perfect topic to partner on with Look Good, Feel Better,” shesays. “When you buy a pencil, one will be donated to a woman with cancer, and this product will give them back great brows.”
“All of the chemists at the American Cancer Society has to approve every single ingredient in the product to make sure it’s safe enough for women undergoing chemotherapy,” says Kern. “So it’ good for sensitive skin, along with being paraben-free, noncomedogenic and hypoallergenic.”
A great product with equally great intentions, Brow Power Universal Eye Pencil, $24, is available on Itcosmetics.com.
Make sure you don’t over-pluck your brows with these tips from brow guru Ramy Gafni.

Heidi Klum Talks Emmys 2010 Dress, ‘Project Runway’ Season 8, and Michelle Obama
Filed under: Fashion, Celebrity, News, Designers & Brands, Celebrity Style

What’s a supermodel to do when she needs a dress and the fashion world is packing their designer bags for summer vacation?
If you’re Heidi Klum — host, judge, and executive producer of Lifetime’s “Project Runway” — you start calling in fashionable favors.
Klum, who received an Emmy nomination for hosting “Project Runway,” told reporters that she’s busy figuring out her red-carpet look for the Aug. 29 ceremonies.
“I’ve been putting my feelers out there. I’m getting close to whittling something down, because you have to,” she says of her designer options.
“If not, everyone hops on their boat and they’re off drinking champagne!”
Then again, Klum could call on her new cast of 17 aspiring designers to make it work for her. “There’s some really fun, flamboyant talent this season,” she says of the latest “Project Runway” contestants.
Other insights Klum shared:
She has Washington on her wish list. “My number one dream would be first lady Michelle Obama,” Klum says of her “Project Runway” fantasy judge. “I think she’s super-hip, cool, and fashionable.”
She goes after what she wants. Klum cornered designer Phillip Treacy at this year’s Oscars and talked him into judging a hat-inspired challenge. “He flew over with 15 wild, crazy avant-garde hats,” she says. “And we had the designers do something to go with them.” (C’mon, Heidi, you got that idea from StyleList!) Also in: Betsey Johnson, who will weigh in on the always popular “unconventional materials” challenge.
She wears Christian Siriano. “He has the most business brain. He doesn’t forget to send things. He sends look books. He makes sure when he has a fashion show, he invites you,” she says of the season 4 winner. “Others mosey on with their business as usual. He sends things for me to see and try. I’m busy myself and he makes it easy. He’s clever.”
Her kids are split when it comes to fashion. “Johan doesn’t care much about what he’s wearing. Henry is very particular, even with his pajamas. Leni loves dresses and loves being girlie. She came [to the "Project Runway" set] and the fashion show and wasn’t too impressed. I don’t think she thought the clothes were girlie enough.”
She would like to see the show film in L.A. again. Though she has designs on returning to the West Coast, Lifetime has snipped the idea for good. “People seem to respond better” when the show is in New York, she explains.
She’s honest about the contestants’ talent. Asked if there’s a superstar among this season’s designer wannabes, she says, “If you are talking a McQueen or Galliano, their clothes are so spectacular and only a few can do what they do. I don’t know if you can put our designers in that same box.”
She likes to take it slow. Explaining why the show has switched from an hour-long to a 90-minute format, she says, “People would tell us, ‘We don’t understand why this person or that person left.’ Elimination day goes on for four or five hours and we wanted people to see more of that.”
She’s not a Mean Girl. Klum denies judge Nina Garcia’s claim that she has morphed into the show’s toughest critic. “I hope not,” Klum says. “I say what I think. Maybe it comes across as mean sometimes, but there are four judges. I don’t make the call myself.”
She knows what makes for a sexy Mama. “Be organized. Narrow it all done to make it work,” she advises. “Get rid of all the things that are too ‘Mumsy.’ I got rid of all my over-baggy, nasty, jim-jam things that are frumpy, so when you put things together, everything is working.”
Season 8 of “Project Runway” premieres on Lifetime July 29 at 9pm ET.
In other Lifetime news, read our interview with “Drop Dead Diva” star Brooke Elliott.

Topshop’s Siren Music Festival Extravaganza
Filed under: Fashion, News, Designers & Brands, Stylish Living
Deals on wheels: The Topshop van will be at the Siren Music Festival this weekend. Photo courtesy of Topshop
A major fast fashion chain and a hot summer music festival are joining forces once again.
You might recall H&M designing a collection solely inspired by Coachella (fringed ponchos, frosted denim shorts, leopard-print dresses) and now Topshop is getting in on the outdoor music action with a variety of stylish activities planned for this weekend’s Siren Music Festival in Coney Island, New York.
From 12pm to 9pm on Saturday (July 17), the team behind the cult-followed British import is rolling up to the free Village Voice-sponsored festival in a heart-speckled Topshop van and giving away a $500 shopping spree at the New York City flagship, along with other fun prizes.
To show off Topshop’s new makeup line, the company will be serving up free makeovers, where concert goers can choose from festival-themed looks such as “Space Siren” (futuristic minimalism), “Feathers” (a colorful and decorative look), and “Night Eyes” (something bold to grab attention once the sun starts setting).
Then, once music fans are all gussied up (or even if their faces are au naturel), they can hit the Topshop photo booth for a photo souvenir to take home.
Photographer Ellei Johndro will also be on hand to snap pictures of other stylish attendees, which will be posted on Topshop’s Facebook page, so those going should dress to impress (as if you don’t already know that).
Can’t make it to the festival? Check out StyleList’s street style slideshow from last year’s stellar event.

Carrie Underwood’s Wedding Shoes - Stuart Weitzman Platform Pumps
Filed under: Accessories, Fashion, Celebrity, News, Celebrity Style

We already know what Carrie Underwood wore on her head for the July 10 wedding to hockey player Mike Fisher (check out her pretty Band.do headband!), now we’ve uncovered what she had on her toes.
The 27-year-old singer has on obvious affinity for all things sparkly, wearing a blinged-out tiara and later a headpiece made of vintage brooches, not to mention her huge engagement ring, so it’s no surprise she also added some shiny shoes into the mix.
The bride’s footwear designer of choice? Stuart Weitzman, who designed two similar pairs of peep-toe double platform “Avalon” sling-back pumps for both the ceremony and the reception.
For the former, Underwood opted for the heels in white satin with the heel and platform encrusted with pink Swarovski crystals, which were also scattered over the top of the shoe. The shoes remained mostly hidden under her long Monique Lhuillier gown.
For the reception, the country crooner donned a second pair of the Stuart Weitamen pumps — with even more bling on them! — in a darker hue to match the sash of the strapless Monique Lhuillier minidress she changed into, which provided plenty of room for the shoes to shine.
“These crystal pave double platform peep-toes selected by Carrie were the perfect wedding shoes for her,” Weitzman says. “They added playful glamour to complement her ultra-feminine theme.”
Fans of the $750 shoes Underwood wore can place a special order by calling 212-750-2555 or they can scoop up other “Avalon” styles, such as this $302 buff python option, or $355 this glittery black and silver version.
For more celebrity wedding scoop, check out which designer Emily Blunt wore for her wedding in Italy to “The Office” star John Krasinski.
