After All the Shame, Pitino Should Resign
Filed under: NCAA Basketball
For a moment there, you had to laugh out loud. Rick Pitino sat in a crowded courtroom Wednesday and testified that this Karen Cunagin Sypher woman whispered to him, unsnapped his pants in a booth at an otherwise empty Italian restaurant and proceeded to have sex with him.
“Very briefly,” he said.
Oh, and we’re all supposed to feel better now because he says the session was brief. It doesn’t really matter, of course, whether Pitino used the entire shot clock or fired prematurely. Sex in a restaurant is sex in a restaurant, a particularly tacky and mindless act in any context, much less that involving a married man who is the most visible face of the University of Louisville. If he’s the custodian of a basketball program that demands players to show discipline and sound judgment in their daily lives, how is Ricky Dicky supposed to be taken seriously when he couldn’t control his sexual appetite at an actual table where people eat and drink in a well-regarded establishment? I mean, that’s just gross behavior. For too many reasons to count — including how he possibly can enter a recruit’s living room and explain his actions to mom and dad — Pitino should realize he has permanently undermined his credibility as an educator and do the right thing.
He should resign his position as coach.
But somehow, there is little chance of that happening. Even if Pitino and the school are being subjected to unprecedented humiliation in the sensational trial of Sypher, who is charged with attempting to extort him and lying to the FBI, the U of L administration backed him earlier this year by granting him a four-year extension and a $3.6 million longevity bonus. Seems there’s a brand new downtown arena with seats and suites to fill, and rather than take a stand for integrity and decency, the university chose to absorb a summertime bullet in hopes the city will forgive and forget. Sad thing is, a lot of folks already have forgiven Pitino in Louisville because they know he’s a master of his craft. Such is the runaway-train hoops culture in the state of Kentucky, where up the road in Lexington, John Calipari can run roughshod over academia with his one-and-done sales pitch to prep stars and hear little local outcry. All they want in the Commonwealth is to win big, and if Pitino likes an after-hours booty call at Porcini, the fans don’t care as long as the Cardinals are in a Final Four mode.

Kickboxer Adrienne Simmons, 34, Dies From Injuries Suffered in Bout
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Orlando announced on Tuesday morning that amateur kickboxer Adrienne Simmons passed away after she was knocked unconscious during an International Kickboxing Federation fight in Orlando (Fl) on Sunday. She was 34 years old.
According to WFTV, Simmons - who was from Atlanta - suffered the injury in the third round of a three-round fight against Lindsay Scheer. Scheer landed a left hook that hurt Simmons and created immediate swelling.
Simmons’ boyfriend, Chike Ajudua, and her trainer, were upset that no medical staff was present at the fight to transport her immediately to the hospital. Simmons was in critical condition by the time she arrived at Orlando Regional Medical Center.
The organizer of the fight, Steve Fossum, said that he arranged for emergency crews to be on standby at a nearby fire station. “Because they were so close and it was so easy to get to. They could be there in a two- to three-minute call time,” Fossom told WFTV.
No criminal charges have been filed and Fossum told WFTV that it was one of the first incidents of the kind in his organization’s history.

Scott Dixon Wins Edmonton as Helio Goes Berserk Over Penalty
Filed under: IRL
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Scott Dixon won a controversial Honda Edmonton Indy on Sunday after Helio Castroneves crossed the finish line first, but was penalized for blocking his teammate.
An enraged Castroneves, who ended up 10th, stormed from his car after the race to yell at IndyCar officials and grabbed Indy Racing League security chief Charles Burns by the lapels of his shirt, shaking him.
After cooling down somewhat, Castroneves told a TV interviewer, “I have nothing smart to say. The only thing I can say is talk to my attorneys.”
Castroneves took the lead from Team Penske teammate and pole winner Will Power with 18 laps to go in the 95-lap race, but was called for blocking Power when Power tried to pass him on a restart with two laps to go.
With Power blocked by Castroneves, Dixon stormed past him to take second place as they charged toward the finish line.
But the flagman showed Castroneves the black flag, while Dixon received the checkered flag. Power was second, followed by Dario Franchitti, Ryan Briscoe and Ryan Hunter-Reay.
It was Dixon’s second victory of the season, but he won this one without ever being the lead car.
“Pretty strange to not run a lap and actually win the race,” Dixon said. “But rules are rules, man. It was obvious Will had a pretty good run. The only way to stop him was blocking.”

Andy Roddick Upset by Mardy Fish in Straight Sets at ATC
Filed under: ATP
JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Best friends off the court, Mardy Fish and Andy Roddick squared off on Saturday at the Atlanta Tennis Championships. They put the friendship aside for an hour and 41 minutes to battle for the opportunity to head to the finals on Sunday. In straight sets, Fish defeated Roddick, 7-6(5), 6-3.
It was apparent early that both Roddick and Fish were prepared for a long battle. They both held serve through the entire first set and long rallies were the norm.
What really stood out from Fish was how well he moved and his ability to dictate points with his aggressive style leading into the point.
“I thought his first serve was going pretty well and he attacked pretty well,” said Roddick. “He just played better than I did tonight. He was taking that first ball and dictating with it. When someone is executing that and doing it well, it’s going to be out of your control.”
Fish jumped out quickly in the first-set tiebreaker, using some precision ground strokes and well-timed approach shots. He had three set point opportunities, two on his serve before he closed out the set.

Giants’ Eugenio Velez Hit in Head by Foul Ball, Taken to Hospital
Filed under: Diamondbacks, Giants
PHOENIX (AP) — San Francisco Giants outfielder Eugenio Velez will spend the night at a hospital after being struck in the head by a foul ball while he was in the dugout.
The team reported he was doing well considering the circumstances.
Velez was standing in the dugout in the fourth inning Saturday in a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks when teammate Pat Burrell hit a sharp liner into San Francisco’s dugout.
Velez was knocked off his feet and teammates immediately gathered around, while Burrell took a few moments before stepping back into the batter’s box.
Giants trainers continued to work on Velez into the bottom half of the inning before strapping him to a stretcher. He was carried into the tunnel leading to the visitors clubhouse, then was taken to a hospital.

If World Cup Is Epic, Why Does it Have So Many Issues?

PARIS — Here in the epicenter of soccer dysfunction, we have yet another ghastly headline involving those chaotic French footballers. Franck Ribery didn’t manage a goal during the World Cup, but he was charged with scoring illegally during his 26th birthday party in Berlin, when he had sex with a prostitute who was under 18. He was grilled by police for seven hours here this week and, if convicted, faces up to three years in prison.
“I never knowingly did anything wrong,” said Ribery, who is 27, married, the father of two children and says he flew in the call girl from France for the occasion.
So add this to the mayhem that shamed the national team during the just-completed World Cup, a disgrace to the mother land that only reconfirmed that the French, in general, bitch and gripe at levels far above the global norm. You had players who refused to practice, the resignation of the team director, an inept coach who once proposed to a girlfriend on television immediately after a tough international loss, profane arguments between the players and coach and, inevitably, a pathetic early ouster in the tournament that defines countries and culture in this part of the world.
All of which led the new France coach, Laurent Blanc, to take an unprecedented but refreshing step Friday. He suspended all 23 of the nation’s World Cup players for his first match next month, a step approved by the French federation. This is a brilliant decision, a cumulative punishment that doesn’t single out one player but targets them all. They cannot be humiliated enough, and while you might say it’s no biggie to suspend everyone for a friendly against Norway, it will be if the suspension turns out to be a long-term whitewashing for some of the players. A new team will be announced Aug. 5, and that could be a new start for Les Bleus.
Hope Franck Ribery got his money’s worth. The sex romp might cost him his career.
In America, we understand how a franchise as esteemed as the Yankees mirrors mighty New York and how a franchise as lowly as the Chiefs reflects wee Kansas City. But faring miserably in the World Cup is a failure that a country must live with for four years and seeps through the national consciousness like sewage stench. In that sense, there is no argument that the World Cup is the most colossal and important sports event on the planet, even if we in the States foolishly want to keep pushing the Super Bowl for such a distinction. And as long as soccer’s showcase remains in such an epic context — with ratings continuing to soar in all parts of the globe, including a 41-percent spike in the U.S. for Spain’s 1-0 overtime victory over the Netherlands in the final — I may as well ask a pertinent question.
Why is the World Cup such a mess?

Journalism Award For Mitch Albom Ignites Media Melee
Filed under: Sports Business and Media
Everybody loves a good catfight, particularly when it involves members of the media.
Well, there’s a nice one going on now over the recent presentation of a prestigious award to one of the nation’s most visible sports columnists, which triggered a flood of criticism by other columnists.
The event that triggered the row occurred when the Associated Press Sports Editors bestowed its highest honor, the Red Smith Award, on best-selling author Mitch Albom.
Albom, a longtime columnist at the Detroit Free Press, has received the APSE’s annual column-writing contest 13 times, and was given the Red Smith Award by the organization for lifetime achievement.
The designation was announced in March and Albom received the award last month at the APSE convention in Salt Lake City.
At the awards ceremony, Albom dispensed advice, including this passage: “And always, always, be mindful of who you are serving — not your ego, but your reader. I never spent much time in media hospitality suites because I saw the trap of comparing notes, trying to impress colleagues with who could write more viciously. I saw how quickly conversations degenerated into complaint sessions and where I lived, cynicism was the wrong approach. The reader of Detroit, the guys on the assembly lines, the grandfathers in Alpena, wished every day they could trade places with me. If I turned cynic, how would that serve them? So I often kept a distance. I spent more time at events than in the office, more time in my community than in press boxes or media parties, and this may have cost me over the years. People who don’t know you are often the quickest to speak about you, especially if you are blessed with some success.”
