Corey Pavin: Tiger ‘High on My List’ as Ryder Cup Pick
Tiger Woods didn’t make the list of players who automatically qualify for the Ryder Cup based on their standings amongst U.S. golfers.
But ignore for a second the awkwardness of Tiger missing that cut and look at the silver lining: Corey Pavin, the Ryder Cup captain, has Woods “high on my list” as one of the four captain’s choices that Pavin has to make by Sept. 7.
You may recall that Pavin and Jim Gray had a little spat over the possibility of Tiger joining the Ryder Cup without qualifying: Gray reported that Pavin had already promised Tiger a spot, Pavin subsequently denied Gray’s report, Gray came up to Pavin at the PGA Championship and told him he was “going down.”
This little fracas is important because, clearly, Pavin wasn’t happy with Gray’s behavior or his claims and likely won’t want to make it appear as if he did make any promises to Woods.
Additionally, Pavin said he’d like to see Tiger improve his tournament performance leading up to that deadline, but it’s entirely possible that his statement is just to make sure that people know he’s not already settled on adding Woods to the Ryder Cup field.
The only three tournaments remaining before Pavin’s deadline are the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., this coming week, The Barclay’s and the Deutsche Bank Championship — the latter two are FedExCup tourneys.
